Overview of Hand Block Printing on Fabric

Hand block printing is one of India's oldest textile traditions, dating back centuries in Rajasthan. Carved wooden blocks are dipped in natural or pigment dyes and pressed by hand onto fabric, one motif at a time. Unlike mechanised printing, every piece carries slight, beautiful variations — proof of the human hand behind it. The technique is prized for its rich, layered detail, breathable finish, and the way it lets colour sit naturally into the weave of pure cotton and khadi.

How Our Fabric Is Printed: The Process

Every fabric that leaves our Jaipur facility goes through three careful stages:

• Pre-Production: Our design team finalises the motif, and skilled karigars hand-carve teak wood blocks specific to the pattern. Natural and pigment dyes are mixed to match the exact shade required, and the base cambric cotton or khadi is washed and stretched taut on printing tables to prepare for printing.
• Production: Each block is dipped in dye and pressed firmly onto the fabric by hand, repeated precisely across the entire length to build the full repeat pattern. Multi-colour designs use a separate block for each colour, layered with careful alignment. Once printed, the fabric is sun-dried or heat-set to lock the colour into the fibre for lasting durability.
• Post-Production: Every batch passes through detailed quality checks — colourfastness, GSM consistency, and print alignment are all inspected before a single meter leaves our facility. Fabric is then folded, labelled, and packed, ready for retail, boutique, or wholesale delivery.
